The Waltons...Schuyler, VA... Part 1

I have to start off by saying(and I'm sure my hubby is tired of hearing this already), but I absolutely LOVE Virginia!! I loved the Shenandoah Valley area that we were in and I love the area that we were in the last two days, it is simple beautiful and feels like home.
We stayed at a KOA on the outskirts of Charlottesville and I can't begin to tell you how gorgeous the area is. These pictures just don't do it justice(and I'm sorry for the poor quality, I forgot the memory card for my camera so I had to use my tablet).
Lots of vineyards in the area and also peach orchards...
Lots and lots of winding rolling hill roads...
We spotted this mamma deer with triplets!!  Their deer are smaller than Maine deer and they are very plentiful.
 Also lots of horsefarms...
 More deer...
 Ruins on little back roads...
 Pretty drives...
 Cows and farms...
 Scenic views...
 Adorable houses....
Lots of quaint churches that are still in use...
And on our 14 mile journey to Schuyler, our gps in the van(which likes to take us on backgrounds) happened to stumble us by this place(it may have also been that hubby took us on a good wrong turn)... Any ideas who were the occupants of this estate?...
The drive going up... quite long if you are old and don't drive well... any ideas yet?...
It's hard to see, but there is a huge brick mansion up there on that hill....

This was the home the Baldwin sisters was based off of.  Which actually happened to be a mother daughter pair of the local soap stone plant owners. They made the recipe using apricots instead of the usual apples.
 More of their land...
The house again...  It's about 7  miles from the Hamner's(Waltons) home.

Here we are fueling up the van at Ike Godsey's store...(about 1/2 a mile from the house)
Becca and I waiting at the store... :)

This general merchandise store sits in front of the Hamner's house. It sells trinkets and souveniers now, but it used to be the shed that Earl(John Boy) used to escape to to write in his journal and then later housed his printing press.  Wait till you see what hubby bought for me from here.

The Baptist church the Hamners attended... this sits within a few hundred feet of the Hamner home. It was amazing how close they were to everything.
Behind the church, through these woods sits Drucilla's pond...

This is the road that runs beside the Hamner home, Rockfish River rd.  To the left would be the Hamner house, from the camera angle is the store, to the right is the church, and up the road further to the left is the old school which is now a community center and the Walton Museum.

Here is looking up the Rockfish River Rd...behind those trees on the left is the Hamner house and up the road on the right is the school, the driveway leads to the store(old woodshed).
I'm trying to give you the lay of the land and show you how close everything is...  The woodshed(now store) is there on the right with the house directly behind and straight ahead through the trees you can see their church..
Another view of the woodshed(store) on the left and the house is directly in front through the trees...

The Hamner home...

This picture got out of order, but this is part of the Esmont(Baldwin ladies) estate...

Stayed tuned, I have lots more to share from here...

Tiff

  6. I still enjoy The Waltons every afternoon. After reading several of Earl Hamner's books I have always wanted to visit the area. Now that we are on the other side of the country, it maybe a while before we can visit. I'm anxiously awaiting the next post.
